Plant-Based Food at our kindergarten in Hove

Food is a big part of our ethos.

We are a fully plant-based kindergarten in Hove.

We provide fresh, nourishing meals that support children’s health, inclusion and understanding of the world around them.

Every meal is plant-based, freshly prepared and made largely with the children, using ingredients grown in our own kitchen garden. It’s one of the most practical ways we live our values every day.

Our approach to food

Food at Young Friends is not separate from learning, it is part of daily life.

From growing and preparing to sharing and eating, food at our kindergarten is calm, social and unhurried.

Children experience food as:

  • nourishing and freshly made
  • shared and unhurried
  • connected to where it comes from
  • respectful of the environment and each other

What children eat

Freshly Prepared Meals

Every meal and snack is cooked from scratch each day using whole, plant-based ingredients.

Fully Plant-Based

Our menu is entirely plant-based, supporting our sustainability ethos and making meals naturally inclusive for most dietary needs.

Balanced & Nourishing

Meals are designed to support children’s growth, energy and wellbeing through the day.

Inclusive for All

Allergies and dietary requirements are carefully managed. We’ll always find a suitable alternative so no child misses out.

How food is served

Mealtimes at Young Friends are calm, social and unhurried.

  • Children are supported to serve themselves and each other where appropriate
  • Portion sizes follow the ‘fist rule’
  • Seconds are offered fairly
  • Staff sit with children and model calm, respectful behaviour at the table

Food is never rushed, pressured or used as reward.

Food as learning

Food is part of how children understand the world.

At Young Friends children plant, harvest and prepare food,  learning where food comes from and taking pride in what they’ve made.

Children learn by:

  • growing ingredients in our kitchen garden
  • harvesting, preparing and cooking together
  • composting food waste and understanding why it matters
  • finding out where food comes from and what goes into it

Sustainability in food

As a sustainable kindergarten in Hove, food is approached with care and responsibility. We buy, grow and cook seasonally, with nourishing weekly menus planned carefully.

  • Food waste is reduced and reused where appropriate
  • Ingredients are chosen thoughtfully and seasonally
  • Children learn that everyday choices matter

This creates meaningful, real-life learning experiences.

Plant based menu

  • Every meal and snack is made from scratch, using real, nutritious ingredients chosen to give children the best start.
  • Menus planned seasonally and sustainably
  • Allergies and intolerances carefully catered for with homemade alternatives
  • Homemade oat milk and fresh water available throughout the day
  • Vegetables grown and harvested in our own kitchen garden
  • Recipes shared with families so children can enjoy favourite dishes at home
