One of the many unique experiences children at Young Friends enjoy is our dance studio where children engage in planned music and movement activities to further develop strong listening skills and confident body control. It is located on our 1st floor, adjoining the preschool room and has a comfy carpet and lots of natural light, masses of multicultural instruments including two standing drums and a keyboard and movement resources such as colourful materials, pom-poms and ribbon wands. Our parachutes often get pulled out in here too. The preschoolers have free-flow access to this area throughout their day, while the Baboons and Gibbons plan for their music and movement sessions. They always get very excited to go up there! We also have a projector and screen which is used for all sorts of things such as shadow puppet shows, larger than life stories and projecting an array of exciting things to make learning come to life.
Music and dance is not just confined to the studio however. Instruments may also come out in the children’s rooms and dancing can often be seen in the garden, especially in the sunshine, as there is lots of space to express oneself! Music is always playing when children enter in the mornings and is used throughout the day for all sorts of reasons; to enhance self esteem, relax and often just to jiggle and wiggle about and have some fun!
